My grandmother's last garden at age 90.
Time: 1950's, Place: Harlan County, Ky.
(Five yr old Sara and her grandmother, Belle, discover someone is stealing vegetables from the garden and devise a plan)
By ten o'clock, the katydids shrilled, the frogs croaked, and night sounds blanketed Granny Belle's home place. Carrying a bundle of white shirts under her arm, Belle led Sara into that darkness, down to the garden on the banks of the Cumberland River. "Have you got your gun, Sara?" Belle asked. "And the caps?"
"Yes, Granny." Sara checked her holster and tighened the string on her cowboy hat. I'm ready, she thought.
Granny laid the bundle of shirts down on the riverbank. "Scoot down thru here, they can't see us," she whispered. They crouched down between stalks of corn. "Give me the gun so I can load it right now."
The clouds shadowed the moonlight creating a lure for those who boldly stole from Belle Watkins. Sara dozed off as her partner kept a watchful eye.
"Sara, wake up! Hear that?" Granny whispered, nudging the girl.
As the noise stopped, the clouds scattered, revealing creepy figures moving thru the garden. While one shadow picked tomatoes, the other placed the bundle of shirts in their boat. Granny Belle and cowgirl Sara hid quietly for several minutes. It didn't take long for Cowgirl Granny's anger to stir. "Stop thief! Stop or I'll shoot!" Belle stood up amidst the corn stalks, raised the capgun and shot a series of pops in the air. It woke the chickens, causing a bellow of cackling and screeching in the hen house. Sara bravely stood beside her Granny. The men threw the vegetables down, ran and jumped in their boat as Granny and Sara chased them. "Don't you dare come back!" Belle shouted.
"Granny, who were they?" Sara asked.
"Don't worry. We'll know tomorrow for sure. The shirts will tell," Granny answered.
The two cowgirls, having reclaimed their land, marched back to the house pleased and proud.
